What I like most about the Open is that it allows you to use the skills you have worked on over the past year and see how far you have come in your training. The above picture is of me doing chest to bar pull ups in last year's Open WOD 13.5: 4 minute AMRAP of 15 65# thrusters and 15 C2B pull ups. (Please excuse my form lol!) It was a huge accomplishment for me to get 1 C2B pull up, let alone the 8 I was able to complete, with 23 reps in total. I had only gotten my first kipping pull up a few weeks prior and doing C2B seemed nearly impossible. But the Open's atmosphere at my box, SIC, was so electric it motivated me to perform my best. I was so proud of my 8 reps! Fast forward to December 2013, I performed this same WOD and was able to not only get through the first round of thrusters and pull ups but through the 2nd round of thrusters and on to the 2nd round of C2B pull ups. My total reps: 49! Quite a PR!
I am excited to participate in the Open again this year. It has become a way for me to gage my progress as well as define my weaknesses. As Coach Greg Glassman has said "Hiding from your weaknesses is a recipe for incapacity and error." I am also excited to have that high energy, buzzing atmosphere at the box again. Coming from a back ground in competitive cheerleading, I feed off that energy and it motivates me to give my all. This is why I recommend every CrossFitter to sign up for the Open. Even if you are new or think that you are not fit enough to compete, try. You will learn a lot about yourself and will have blast doing it.
