You can give your heart a break by allowing gravity to do its job. When you do a headstand or variation, fluids and blood filled with nutrients and oxygen rushes from your feet to your head. This act takes stress off the heart, oxygenates the brain, improves circulation, stimulates and detoxifies the adrenal, pituitary and hypothalamus glands, increases digestion, and strengthens core muscles. Not to mention, you look cool doing it!
There are a few variations to headstand. In the classic headstand, the crown of the head is placed on the ground. Elbows are kept in alignment with the shoulders and the hands are clasped and placed around the back of the head. To warm up, you can raise one leg to the sky while keeping the other leg on the ground, then switch. Try this a couple of times. The next step is to come into the "egg" position. Raise your legs up one at a time or together while keeping knees bent and hold. From there, raise both legs up slowly and gently, using your core muscles to control, into full headstand. If you are having a tough time balancing, the tripod technique can help. The pic above shows the arm positioning for tripod headstand. This technique creates a larger base and therefore makes it easier to balance. Doing the headstand against a wall may also make you feel more comfortable.
Don't forget to smile and have fun while playing around with headstand and take advantage of all the health benefits that come along with it!
