Nicole gave me a rundown of what the class is like. In Bikram, the same 26 poses are done in every class along with 2 breathing exercises. The poses are held for long periods of time. There is no Vinyasa. The warmth of the room allows the muscles to relax and lengthen. We began with a breathing exercise and I was warmed up in no time. Hell, I was warmed up just lying in Savasana before the class started! Nicole was very attentative to me and the other new student in the class and she checked in with us frequently.
In Bikram, the teacher does not do the poses but talks you into them and gives cues to get you deeper into each pose. Nicole is a very vibrant woman and it came across in her cues. I enjoyed her teaching style. Some of the poses were familiar and some not so much. This style is so different from what I am used to. In Bikram, poses are to be completed with straight legs, no bent knees. This is totally opposite of what I was taught in my Three Sister’s Yoga training but I didn’t mind changing to meet the Bikram standards. I found it very helpful to have the mirrors. I could, for once, see what I looked like in poses and was able to adjust myself accordingly. (Sometimes we think we are doing something and our bodies are not.)
I had to take a few breaks during the class. The heat became very intense towards the end of the standing series. Nicole recommends staying in the room and taking a seat, rather than going outside. I was able to recollect myself fairly quickly and decrease my heart rate while remaining in the room. I sweat, a lot! I sweat so much that holding some of the poses proved quite difficult. There are many poses that use compression as well as chin locks. I felt a little claustrophobic at times using the chin lock but I think it will get better with time.
I have to admit I felt shaky while exiting the room after Savasana. My knees were a little bit wobbly so I took my time getting myself and things together. I felt a little light headed. It wasn’t until I was driving home that I could feel the real affects from the class. I felt lighter in all senses of the word, bodily, mentally and spiritually. It was as though all of the toxins were drained out of my body. It was mind blowing. I felt a sort of rebirth. I thought to myself, “Now I get it!” (LOL) I was so happy with the results that I have scheduled my 2nd class for Thursday!
